Adding Alert Receivers

Alert Receivers

Alert receivers define who gets notified when alerts trigger in your energy monitoring system. AERL Cloud uses email-based notifications with severity-level routing to ensure the right people get the right alerts.

Understanding Receivers

How Receivers Work

Receivers are email addresses configured to receive alert notifications based on severity levels. When an alert triggers, AERL Cloud automatically sends email notifications to all receivers configured for that alert's severity level or higher.

Severity-Based Routing

Receivers are assigned minimum severity levels:

  • Information: Receives all alerts (Information, Warning, Error)
  • Warning: Receives Warning and Error alerts only
  • Error: Receives only Error (critical) alerts

This system ensures that critical alerts reach everyone while routine notifications only go to those who need them.

Managing Receivers

Accessing Receiver Management

  1. Navigate to Alerts in the main menu
  2. Click the Receivers tab
  3. View current receivers organized by severity level

Receiver Display

The receivers page shows:

  • Email addresses grouped by minimum severity level
  • Severity indicators with color-coded icons
  • Management actions for editing and removing receivers

Adding Receivers

Creating New Receivers

  1. Click Add Receiver button
  2. Enter email address:
    • Must be valid email format
    • Will be validated before saving
  3. Select minimum severity level:
    • Choose lowest severity this receiver should get
    • Higher severity alerts are automatically included
  4. Click Add Receiver to save

Email Validation

  • Automatic email format validation
  • Real-time feedback for invalid addresses
  • Prevention of duplicate emails at same severity level
  • Clear error messages for validation failures

Severity Level Selection

Choose the appropriate minimum level based on the recipient's role:

Information Level Recipients

  • System administrators
  • Technical support teams
  • Monitoring operators
  • Anyone needing full system visibility

Warning Level Recipients

  • Site managers
  • Maintenance coordinators
  • Operations teams
  • Those focused on actionable issues

Error Level Recipients

  • Emergency contacts
  • Senior technicians
  • Management escalation
  • Critical response teams

Editing Receivers

Modifying Receiver Settings

  1. Click Edit (pencil icon) next to any receiver
  2. Update email address if needed
  3. Change severity level:
    • Moving to higher severity reduces notifications
    • Moving to lower severity increases notifications
  4. Save changes

Severity Level Migration

When changing severity levels:

  • Receiver is removed from old severity group
  • Receiver is added to new severity group
  • Takes effect immediately for new alerts
  • Historical associations are preserved

Removing Receivers

Deleting Receivers

  1. Click Delete (trash icon) next to receiver
  2. Confirmation required:
    • Type the email address to confirm deletion
    • Prevents accidental removal
    • Clear warning about permanent action
  3. Confirm deletion to remove permanently

Safety Features

  • Typed confirmation: Must type email address exactly
  • Clear warnings: Explains permanent nature of deletion
  • Visual emphasis: Red color scheme for destructive action
  • Cancel option: Easy to abort if clicked accidentally

Email Notification Details

Notification Content

Alert emails include:

  • Alert name and description
  • Severity level with visual indicators
  • Triggering condition and current values
  • Location and device information
  • Timestamp of alert trigger
  • Dashboard link for immediate access

Delivery Behavior

  • Immediate delivery when alerts trigger
  • No duplicate suppression - each trigger sends email
  • Reliable routing through AERL's email infrastructure
  • Delivery tracking for monitoring notification success

Email Format

  • Professional layout with AERL branding
  • Mobile-friendly responsive design

Managing Multiple Receivers

Team Organization

Organize receivers by function:

  • Operations team: Information level for full visibility
  • Maintenance crew: Warning level for actionable issues
  • Emergency contacts: Error level for critical alerts
  • Management: Error level for escalation

Best Practices

  • Regular review: Update receiver lists as teams change
  • Role-based assignment: Match severity to responsibility level
  • Contact redundancy: Multiple receivers for critical alerts
  • Testing: Verify email delivery periodically

Scaling Considerations

  • No hard limits on number of receivers per severity
  • Efficient delivery through bulk email processing
  • Organization isolation - receivers only get alerts from their org
  • Performance optimized for large notification lists

Troubleshooting

Emails Not Received

Check these common issues:

  • Spam filters: AERL emails may be filtered
  • Email address typos: Verify spelling and format
  • Severity mismatch: Receiver level higher than alert severity
  • Organization access: Receiver must belong to same organization

Managing Email Volume

  • Adjust severity levels: Raise minimum levels to reduce volume
  • Review alert rules: Tune thresholds to reduce noise
  • Separate operational and critical contacts: Use appropriate severity routing
  • Regular cleanup: Remove inactive receivers

Email Delivery Issues

  • Whitelist sender: Add AERL email domain to allowed senders
  • Check corporate filters: Verify company email policies
  • Alternative addresses: Use personal emails if corporate blocks
  • Delivery logs: Contact support for delivery investigation

Integration with Alert Rules

Automatic Routing

  • Alert rules don't specify receivers directly
  • Severity level determines which receivers get notified
  • All applicable receivers notified simultaneously
  • Consistent routing across all alert types

Workflow Integration

  1. Create alert rules with appropriate severity levels
  2. Configure receivers for each severity level
  3. Test with sample alerts to verify routing
  4. Monitor and adjust based on team feedback
